It’s no secret that the movie trailer industry is a man’s world. I happen to be acquainted with and know many gentlemen who record movie trailer voice overs. Rodney Saulsberry is one of them, and his work is exceptional and highly regarded just as Don’s is.

Let’s cut to the chase. When is the last time you heard a female voice talent promoting a blockbuster film in the theatres or on TV? Even the straight to DVD movies, including independent films, sequels and the like, are predominantly voiced by men.

Why is that? What is holding female voice talent back from excelling in this arena? Maybe we should reevaluate the question we are asking and pose it another way: Who is holding women back in movie trailer voice overs?

Now, we have somewhere to go, because now we have a classifier to add to the mix: It is not just a collection of mere adjectives that turn female voice talent away in this niche, it is a distinct parcel of nouns that are holding the barricade up, even in this time of perceived equal opportunity in the workplace.

A noun is a person, place or thing whereas adjectives (i.e. happy, graceful, smooth, aggressive) are describing words used to compliment or detract from a given noun or verb (action word, i.e. to sing or to record).

So, a noun. A person, place or thing is preventing female voice talent from climbing the movie trailer ladder of success. A place couldn’t do it. A thing which is likely inanimate couldn’t proceed with such acts either.

That leaves us with a person or a group of people. One could hypothesize all the way throughout the creative production cycle and point fingers at a number of different people within the chain of events that lead to a movie trailer being produced and released.

Movie trailers are voice overs, just like any other voice over. They may have more prestige attached to them in some circles, but they are voice overs just the same.

Voice over is a creative element in the cycle and open to different interpretations, including female voice overs, so if it’s not the writers, the producers, the actors, or anyone else associated with the creative aspect of production, who it is it?

That leaves us with those at the end of the line who decide how a movie is presented to the public through marketing efforts. Could it be the film industry itself that is shutting women out?

An interesting factor to consider are “Focus Groups” and their role in what is disseminated to the public. These Focus Groups tend to have a lot of sway and can change many aspects of how a movie is presented, including alternative endings, voice over, and other components in the creative realm.

Focus Groups, from what I understand, can be very exclusive and comfortable. People in focus groups don’t want to lose their positions and due to that fact are often persuaded to make decisions that they do not support simply to keep their jobs.

This includes the voice over in many cases. If it is presented initially with a female voice over instead of a male voice over which is generally perceived to be a safer if not more authoritative option with movie goers that will drive in the sales and “legitimize” a film.

Now, that’s just hypothetical, of course. It wouldn’t be fair to pinpoint focus groups alone when trying to get to the root of the problem.

Is it that the world simply isn’t ready to hear women perform movie trailer voice overs, or are there politics at work behind the scenes? Why are female voice talent left in the dust by the movie industry?

There are many promising female voice over talents who are ready to jump in the ring, including a talented performer named Melissa Disney among others. Only time will tell and open the doors to changing the status quo.

Jesus is married to the Church, which is represented by Mary. Also, Pope John Paul II honored Mother Mary and raised her status considerably. The black Madonna is revered in Poland, and Pope John Paul II credits Mother Mary, as Fatimah, with saving his life. The Rosary worship of Mary as intercessor was actually begun by St Dominic. The Dominican’s inhabited the Santa Maria del Grazie, the Church where Leonardo painted the Last Supper.

Unfortunately, in 591 AD, Pope Gregory popularized the myth that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. This was done through a misinterpretation of the biblical text. The account of Mary Magdalene is juxtaposed to the story of a woman who was a prostitute. This mistaken notion has been corrected. The Catholic Church ruled, in 1969, that Mary was not a prostitute. She was the Apostle to the Apostles.

However, a great deal of damage had already been done regarding the representation of the feminine in the Christian church. For centuries women, though honored by the church, were not accorded equal status with men. This further degraded the image of the feminine, already suspect with the interpretation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

This repression of the feminine is also brutal to men as it disallows men to identify with their own feminine nature. This leads to clarity without compassion and a lack of kindness in the world. The inner nature of the masculine is feminine. The inner nature of the feminine is masculine. Lack of identification with our male/female counterpart cuts us off from our inner nature and destroys our inner peace.

A person’s embrace of their masculine and feminine nature is a natural and healthy part of spiritual growth. As we grow older, men become softer and women become clearer. The strong Grandmother and kindly, laid back Grandfather is a natural progression in human personal growth.

If, as modern psychologists believe, our nature is half masculine and half feminine, a total embrace of both aspects is needed in order to achieve inner peace. This is the union of the anima and animus of Carl Jung and the embrace of the Yin-Yang within.

If a person is cut off from the union of the masculine and feminine nature inside them, it leads to a disintegration of the personality. However, if a person embraces both their feminine and masculine nature, it leads to integration, inner peace and spiritual growth. Only this embrace will lead to peace on earth and good will towards all. This integration of our masculine and feminine nature is represented in the union of the two forms of the Da Vinci Person.

Last weeks, the Box Office seemed to be dominated by light comedies, the kind of comedies that make fun of silly, goofy characters found in silly, goofy situations.

And the perfect examples are: Are We Done Yet? and Blades of Glory. The first one, well, it is a comedy remake; and how are comedy remakes? They are usually worse than the originals. But hey, if you want to see a family moving to the countryside and trying (and mostly failing) to renovate their home, then this is the movie for you.

As for Blades of Glory, all we can say that it is the story of two male skaters that participate (together, as a couple) at pairs figure skating competition. That basically says it all about the awkwardness and embarrassing situations, plus the silly humor.

OK, now up to more serious movies. Let’s move on with the horror and thriller ones, the ones that bring chills up our spines: Disturbia (which is now conveniently placed on the very top of the Box Office), Fracture (this week’s runner up) and Vacancy. What can we say about these movies is the fact that they are actually worth seeing, without exception. Why? Well, Disturbia for the intriguing plot, Fracture for Anthony Hopkins and Vacancy, well, Vacancy is pretty scary. And even more, each of them seems to follow quite an unpredictable story, the kind of stories that manage to keep the audience in suspense from the beginning till the end.

What else can we see in the Box Office these weeks? Well, we can observe that In the Land of Women is doing pretty well; one of those romantic wannabe movies that present us a young, sensitive and kind guy, his tumultuous inner life and relationships with women. You could say pass to this one. We can also observe the highly expected 300, one of those war movies that are highly recommended for their special effects and impressive action scenes. If you are a fan of war movies, this one is definitely worth watching.

The two cojoined forms of the Da Vinci Man inspire us to focus on success. Obstacles can motivate us to our advantage, as stepping stones versus stumbling blocks. The two cojoined forms of the Da Vinci Man also inspire us to create a success team with others, allowing a “win-win” situation for all. This creates a synergy that allows us to make better decisions and improve our overall success.

Spiritual Growth
The Da Vinci Man in the square represents the material world. The Da Vinci Man in the circle represents the spritual world. This distinction is important, for we are reminded to be in the world but not of it. While living our “square” lives we can pray and experience union with God in the “circle”, and thereby feel united with the Divine.

The Da Vinci form in the square (the material world) is united with the Da Vinci form in the circle (the spiritual world). Whenever we want to feel close to God, we need to remember to stay connected to the Divine.

The two cojoined Da Vinci forms also imply a balanced spirituality, roots to ground (Da Vinci Man in square) and wings to fly (circle). Also, by “allowing” (Da Vinci Man in circle), whenever we feel discomfort (square), we are reminded that God is also there healing us, and we can experience His bliss within. God is carrying us, like “Footprints in the Sand.”

Temple House is a very old building dating back to the early nineteenth century. It had originally been the home of a local dignitary. Even though the appearance from outside was of a building that had been standing a long time, the interior was different. It now housed newly refurbished offices and new equipment.

Dr Katherine Copeland carried out her routine tests as always and came back with very little in the way of any abnormal on either the thermometer or on the Gauss meter. She did warn us of the electromagnetic fields that would be a around due to the amount of equipment that was plugged in. We decided that the gauss meter would be pretty useless in these surroundings and decided against taking it with us.

Our spiritual medium Annabel Keogh tried to contact and spirits that may be around the building. This is where things began to get very interesting for the team.

She came back with the name “Alice Carruthers” - which was a name the previous team had come up with - who was a young girl that had been working as a maid to the original owner of the building. She had become pregnant by the owners son but, once she had informed her lover of this, had found herself being pushed down the stairs by the young man who had been worried about the affect this could have on his standing.

We all agreed that we would carry out our investigation around the stairs, as Ann had informed us that she felt no other spirit presences in the building, but that Alice was causing some paranormal activity in an attempt let the living know she was here. Ann also said that she could help the young female spirit find her way to the other side, once our investigation had been completed. With this in mind, we set up our equipment, then waited to see what the night in the house had in store for us.
